Known for being lightweight, this insulation is made from glass that is heated to a liquid and spun into fibres. On average, it has an R-value of 2.5 per inch.

Consultation and Inspection

Consultation and Inspection

During your consultation with Great Canadian Insulation, we will review your options for blown-in insulation and the benefits of each one. This gives us the opportunity to find the type of insulation that best fits your needs and budget.

There are telltale signs that suggest your property can benefit from blown-in insulation. When inspecting your attic, our contractors will look for and ask about the following:

  • Leaks: When your attic isn't properly insulated, water can leak, damaging your walls and ceiling. Having no vapour barrier can cause also cause major air leakage. We remove insulation, sprayfoam a 2-inch monolithic barrier, and top up with R37 to get to R50.

  • Cold Drafts: If your attic is cold, it can mean cool air has made its way into your space. Blown-in insulation can block any gaps.

  • Mould and Moisture: Dampness and mildew in your attic contribute to mould and fungus growth. Proper insulation can keep your roof safe

  • Higher Energy Costs: If the ventilation system in your building isn't set up properly, there may be gaps in your insulation. Finding a professional to fill these in is a wise choice.

  • Temperature Fluctuation: If your attic is hotter or cooler than it's supposed to be, your insulation isn't doing its job. Blown-in insulation can help.

After determining the root cause of your insulation problem, our team will set up a time to install or replace your insulation. Call our team for a free estimate today!

Preparation

Preparation

The contractors at Great Canadian Insulation have an extensive preparation process. Determining where lighting and other utilities are is an important step because knowing their locations will prevent them from getting blocked or covered. Everything has to be perfect before installing blown-in insulation, and we take every precaution to ensure that any pipes or ductwork are protected before we start working.

The first step is using expanding spray foam to seal gaps around plumbing pipes, ceiling perforations, and holes where electrical machines go through. The process is required to seal any air leaks before installing blown-in insulation.

Then rafter vents will be added. They are slid into place and attached with a staple gun. The purpose is to let air flow from the soffit to the ridge vent and to stop moisture from making a home in your attic.

Finally, before blowing your insulation, your contractor will create a barrier to keep the insulation from falling into places like walkways and hatches.

Installation

Installation

Installing blown-in insulation is straightforward. Here's the technique the contractors at Great Canadian Insulation use.

The first step is connecting the hose to the blown-in insulation machine. Your contractor will feed half a bag of fill into the machine and turn on the hose to start blowing in the insulation at the point farthest from your attic's hatch or door.

We are careful to avoid blowing out areas that have already been filled. Our team also doesn't spray loose fill into rafter vents to prevent obstructions. Your contractor will then fill the rest of the attic with insulation. When filling next to the barriers, we will direct the insulation downwards.

The last step is airsealing your attic hatch & building a crib with cardboard, so no insulation falls on top of it.
