Benefits of Spray Foam Insulation

The Advantages of Using Spray Foam

The spray foam insulation process involves spraying a special type of foam inside your home's cavities. It provides an added protective barrier between the harsh outside elements and your home. Using spray foam insulation has several benefits associated with it, including the following:

1. Builds an effective and durable barrier

The main benefit that spray foam insulation provides is that a superior barrier is created compared to what other kinds of insulation offer. The special foam covers the complete space, which makes your home more energy-efficient and air-tight.

2. Resistant to mold

Moisture causes many problems, with one of the most notable ones being mold buildup. This can end up being disastrous since the mold has a tendency to spread very fast and destroy the protective barrier that other kinds of insulation provide. With spray foam insulation, this should not be a problem since the material used for creating the barrier is mold resistant.

3. Durable

There are many different kinds of insulation for you to choose from. However, one thing that contractors sometimes fail to mention is many of them don't last for very long. What that means is that every time the insulation needs to be replaced you will need to spend even more money. However, when spray foam insulation is used, you can be confident that your home will stay insulated for life.

4. Environment-friendly.

Since spray foam insulation makes your home energy efficient, it can improve the carbon footprint of your house significantly. It is always beneficial to utilize technology that helps the environment in addition to humans. Spray foam is durable, which helps to minimize waste. Unlike other kinds of insulation, you usually don't need to replace spray foam insulation.

There are several reasons why more and more homeowners are turning to spray foam insulation to improve the comfort of their homes. Spray Foam Insulation FAQs

Is spray foam insulation toxic? Is it safe for pets and children?

Spray foam is safe for everyone in your home. It is not toxic to pets or children who may ingest it. If you have a pet that likes to taste the walls, spray foam is no more of a risk than other foreign objects; simply be aware and watch for an intestinal blockage.

What is the R-Value of Spray Foam Insulation?

Great Canadian Insulation uses closed-cell spray foam with an R-value of R-6 per inch. This is twice the R-value of fiberglass batting! Great Canadian Insulation can apply it up to 8” thick per day! Our spray foam has a superior R-value exceeding CAN/ULC S705.1-15 since 2017.

It is important to note that R-Value alone does not determine warmth in your home. Spray foam keeps your home comfortable by sealing in your warmth and air-conditioned air, saving you money.

Does spray foam provide a vapour barrier?

Unlike other insulation products, spray foam does not require a separate vapour barrier. At 2” thick, spray foam provides a sealing vapour barrier. It is, in fact, the highest performing air barrier system, tested according to CAN/ ULC-S742 test standard.

Is spray foam insulation safe for the homeowner?

Spray foam is safe; it does not break down or deteriorate, nor does it release any harmful gases. In fact, a home insulated with spray foam has fewer dust particles than those insulated with traditional materials that send out particles. This makes your home more hypoallergenic and a safer place for members of your family with asthma.

Is the spray foam insulation application safe?

Great Canadian Insulation uses only the latest industry-standard Greenguard Gold Certified - Low VOC Emissions spray foam insulation. Our technicians wear protective equipment and have fresh breathing air supplied to their face shields. Within 24 hours of application, the foam is cured and perfectly safe.

Is spray foam insulation flammable?

Like most materials spray foam can catch fire. The spray foam used by Great Canadian Insulation is the newest industry standards and contains a fire deterrent. Spray foam is not easily flammable and requires a constant flame to ignite (not just heat or a spark). To further fire protect your home you may opt to have your Great Canadian Insulation team paint the foam with DC315 paint which is a further flame retardant.

Is spray foam insulation waterproof?

Medium-density (2 lb) spray foam is water-resistant and not quickly and easily damaged by water.   Great Canadian Insulation’s spray foam has been rated flood resistant (FEMA Class 5) so it may reduce your flood insurance premiums, is able to dry, and be successfully cleaned after flooding so it need not be replaced.  Spray foam is lifetime insulation.

Can spray foam insulation be painted?

Yes.  You can paint spray foam, but the finish is not smooth so you will have a highly textured wall.

We recommend you have spray foam painted with DC315 paint when your technicians apply it.  Spray foam is created with a flame retardant mixed into it but DC415 paint adds a further flame retardant barrier.
