Applications
There are multiple types of drywall mud, which come with their benefits. They are often called joint compounds. Check them out to learn more about their various uses:
All Purpose: This type of compound comes pre-mixed in buckets and works for all phases of finishing. It dries slower, but works perfectly for the first three layers over drywall joints.
Topping Compound: It's sold either as a dry powder made to be mixed with water or pre-mixed. Contractors often use it after the first two coats of topping compound.
Taping Compound: Perfect for embedding joint tape, this compound covers plaster cracks around door and window openings. The mud easily laminates drywall panels in multi-layer partitions and ceilings.
Quick-Setting Compound: Also known as "hot mud," this compound is ideal for applying multiple coats per day. It sets in damp conditions and fills deep cracks and holes in the drywall.
Additionally, there are different types of drywall tape your contractor may use. Let's review each one and its many uses:
Different types of drywall tape
There are different types of drywall tape your contractor may use. Let's review each one and its many uses:
Paper Drywall Tape: This type of tape takes skill to use. After mudding the wall, your contractor will lay down the paper tape to remove air bubbles and then cover it with another layer of mud.
Fibreglass Mesh Drywall Tape: Nearly impossible to tear, this tape consists of fibreglass threads woven together. It's very adhesive and strong but is thicker than some others.
Ultra-Thin Fibreglass Drywall Tape: Fine to the touch, this tape is actually stronger than its counterparts. It will not bulge under the drywall compound when you add a layer of mud on top of it.
Metal Drywall Tape: Check out this type of drywall tape that's known as an inside corner bead tape because it doesn't work on the surfaces of outside corners. It has a crease, unlike its counterparts.
With so many options and uses, it can be difficult to know which compound and tape are right for the job. Luckily, the expert contractors at Great Canadian Insulation are here to help. Give us a call today!
Our Process
At Great Canadian Insulation, we pride ourselves on our consistent, thought-out process. Our team ensures your drywall feels like a smooth surface and takes on each project one at a time. When we're working on your property, it's all about you.
Consultation and Inspection
During your consultation with one of our contractors, we will focus on determining the requirements, costs and duration of the jobs. We provide you with essentials when refinishing your drywall.
When inspecting your drywall, your contractor will look for the following signs of disrepair:
Visible Cracking: Although fairly easy to repair with drywall mud or spackle, a putty knife and fine-grit sandpaper, cracks can become a bigger problem if you leave them for too long.
Holes: Drywall is made up of two pieces of paperboard and a lightweight powder called gypsum. After years of use, a hole can form in your drywall, which can become hazardous if ignored.
Wall Discolouration: Issues like water damage, mould or mildew and high humidity can cause discolouration. One of our contractors can determine the root cause and what needs to be done.
Changes in Texture: Older homes may favour different textures than modern ones, such as stipple on the ceiling or walls. It takes a lot of work to change your drywall texture, so be sure to consult a professional.
After finding signs of disrepair, your contractor will work with you to find the best solution. Refinishing your drywall by mudding and taping is often the best option.
Preparation
The day to give your drywall a makeover has finally arrived. Here's what you can expect during the refinishing process. Your contractor will begin by preparing to mud and tape the drywall. The process involves gathering the required supplies, such as mud pans, joint compound and paint buckets. Your contractor will also wear the proper protective equipment and apply plastic or canvas drop cloths or tarps to avoid damaging furniture with sanding dust.
Application
The next step is mudding the joints and screw spots with drywall compounds. It's done by using a utility knife or paint scraper to fill the joints and cover the spots where screws attach the drywall sheets to the studs. Now, it's time for taping. Your contractor will place a piece of paper tape over the mud in the joint while pushing it in after each foot to hold it in place. Then a utility knife is used to embed the tape into the mud to avoid creating air bubbles.
The next part is applying mud and tape to the corners and edges of the drywall. Your contractor will apply mud to the inside corners with a utility knife and place a creased strip of paper drywall tape over the compound. Using light strokes, your contractor will use a utility knife to prevent air bubbles.
Then the tape is applied to the outside corners and mudded over. The mud is left overnight to dry and then your contractor will come back the next day to sand the areas with 100 or 120-grit sandpaper. Following this, your contractor will apply a second coat of drywall mud. This time, the focus is on the joints and corners, but no paper drywall tape is required. A third coat of mud is applied to smooth out any other imperfections. A lightweight all-purpose mud or topping mud is often used for this step. The final step is sanding the taped and mudded drywall. Your contractor will use a pole sander and 120-grit sandpaper to complete this process.
